"I create spaces intertwined with brushstrokes and emotions, refining more interpretations and imaginations of painting."
-Tsai, Yu-Chen 蔡宇貞
Tsai Yu-Chen is a Taiwanese artist whose painting practice explores the intersection of still life, perspective, and cultural hybridity. Born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, she lives and works in the same city, where her studio practice engages with historical references and contemporary observation.
Tsai's work focuses on 'seeing' as a form of collecting. She investigates how visual perspective becomes a cultural gesture through detailed renderings of arranged objects—how it frames, preserves, and transforms meaning across time and place. Her compositions often combine Eastern spatial traditions with Western linear perspective, inviting viewers to reconsider the distance between looking and understanding.
She received her MFA from National Kaohsiung Normal University. She was featured as the cover artist for CANS Art News in 2024, recognising her contributions to contemporary still-life painting in East Asia. Her works have been exhibited at institutions such as the Pingtung Art Museum and were successfully auctioned in Hong Kong in 2024.
